Johannesburg

The city of listed companies and pension money. Venture sits beside that corporate market. It does not define it.

Role

Johannesburg is the headquarters city for mining houses, banks, and the exchange. Sandton, rather than the older downtown in many photographs, is where a large share of that corporate activity now leases space. Those towers are the customer and the savings pool. The venture work sits beside them.

A startup selling software to a bank or a mine has a reason to be here. A startup that needs a quiet product culture often puts the team in Cape Town and the sales lead on a plane. That split is a fact of the country, not an insult to either city.

Capital

Institutional money is governed by pension rules that do not read like a venture mandate. Specialist funds exist. Foreign venture capital has to live with the Reserve Bank’s financial-surveillance regime if the company is South African or if intellectual property is meant to move. Start with the country note on exchange control.

A city can hire. It cannot invent a different companies act, a different sanctions regime, or a different exchange control.
