Preservation is a matching problem
Keeping a nominal balance unchanged is not the same as being able to meet a future real need. The basket, the currency, and the date all have to be named.

Preservation is the wish that wealth still do a job later: pay for a life, a liability, or a bequest, in the currency those things actually cost. The wish is often rewritten as a promise that some asset ‘holds value’. The rewrite skips the only questions that matter. Value in which unit, against which basket, on which date, after which costs?
The consumer price index manual exists because that basket is a piece of statistical design. Compilers choose what households buy, how to handle quality change, and how to treat housing, which is one of the harder parts of the basket. An index can be honest and still be the wrong yardstick for a person whose costs are school fees in one country and medical care in another. This article does not quote an inflation rate. It uses the manual to keep the yardstick visible.
Three ways a holding fails the job
- A cash balance preserves currency units and does nothing, by itself, about a rising basket.
- A nominal claim pays what it promised in currency units. If the basket or the investor’s spending currency moves, the promise was never about those.
- A building can keep its use and still fail as a store of value if condition, tax, vacancy, or a thin resale market consume the outcome.
Matching is the adult version of the idea. If the future expense is rent in London, a London leasehold is a different match from a deposit in dirhams. If the future expense is flexible, the match can be looser, and the word preservation should be looser too. Singapore’s price level and the United Kingdom’s are not interchangeable units of account. The UAE adds a third.
GRIP does not rank assets by how well they have ‘preserved capital’. That ranking would be a backtest, and a backtest is not a contract. The research product is the match: need, unit, date, and the ways the holding can miss.
