Deep tech

A longer recognition window is an administrative fact. A laboratory company is still a slow company.

What the phrase is doing

DPIIT’s startup recognition now distinguishes a deep-technology category, with a longer life and a different turnover condition than the ordinary startup definition. The conditions are on the notification and are not copied here. The distinction is useful because it admits that a chip, a drug, or a robot is not a consumer app. It does not mean the state has certified the science.

IIT Madras Research Park describes itself as a university research park beside IIT Madras, housing companies next to the campus. That is a real piece of Chennai’s infrastructure for this kind of firm. The park’s own site also makes claims about counts and about a fund. Those claims are not adopted here. A park is a landlord and a neighbour to a laboratory. It is not a pipeline.

Time and capital

Deep tech in India shows up around public labs, defence-adjacent work, semiconductors, and medical devices. The customer is often the state, a large manufacturer, or a foreign specialist, not a household. The sales cycle is a tender or a qualification, not a self-serve signup. Venture funds built for software subscriptions are a poor match unless they have said so in the mandate.

Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune each have a piece of this, for different reasons: software research, life sciences, a research park and a factory belt, and an automotive engineering base. None of them is ‘the’ deep-tech city. A company that needs a clean room and a company that needs a theorem are not substitutes.

Cities and sectors are different maps.

A sector note says which rule and which customer. A city note says who can be hired. Neither is a ranking.
